Case Study One
adapted from Learning from Experience, "Developing Portraits of Practice"

Act One

DonHi, Suzanne. I see we have a meeting tomorrow about the eportfolio task force. Tell me what you think about it.
SuzanneWell, Don, I think we will have a lot of issues integrating it. I think the interoperability and privacy issues will be very important to deal with. I really wonder if it is worth it. I am also concerned with bandwidth, access speed, and storage space.
DonOh really? You think the College will be at risk?
SuzanneWith our servers and all the work we'll have to do I am not sure why we want to go this route. I think eportfolios are great, but there are a lot of technical issues to consider.

I am a little concerned about the timelines involved in this project. I would like to discuss this with our group. I realize we are all committed to the project and are a diverse group. I am not really comfortable with my understanding of the technology involved in this integration either. Do we have the support we need from our IT department? Will this impact our deliverables?

Hi. It's Don. I'm calling you from the subway now, but I'll be back in the office soon. I was speaking to Suzanne today and I am a little concerned about whether we are making a good decision in integrating eportfolios. She seems to feel that we are putting the college at risk for privacy and our other systems will be affected. Do you think we are moving too fast on this?

You are now attending your task force meeting
YouHello all, welcome to our task force meeting. I have received some communication from Don and John. They have voiced some concerns about the technological issues around our eportfolio project. John, would you like to summarize your concerns?
JohnSure. We are quite a diverse group and we represent a lot of different departments. I am concerned about the diversity of our technological knowledge. Speaking personally, I am not comfortable with my knowledge of the eportfolio technology and how that impacts our resources. We have some tight timelines and I am wondering what we need to deal with.
YouThank you, John. Don, you have some concerns too. Would you outline those for us?
DonIndeed. I spoke to Suzanne today and I am concerned about the privacy issues and some of the things Suzanne mentioned to me - like servers and access speed. I am concerned we are moving a little too fast here.
YouThank you, gentlemen. I think these are great points. Suzanne would you like to expand on these points?
SuzanneWell, I am very concerned with some of the issues that face us technologically in integrating our eportfolio project. We have the issues of bandwidth, storage space, and as Don mentioned, privacy and also interoperability. I think it would be a good idea to map these out. What do you think about these issues?
